Vietnam Itinerary: How to Plan 10 Days or 2 Weeks
A Vietnam itinerary works best when the distances decide the plan. The country runs 1,726 km by rail from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, so every extra stop costs travel time. This page lays out a 10-day route, a 14-day route, the flights and trains that connect them, and the days each bookable package gives to the same places. For prices on the ground, see the Vietnam trip cost page, and for seasons see the best time to visit Vietnam. The Vietnam tour packages homepage compares the full listings.

Quick answer The honest answer
A first Vietnam itinerary needs about 10 days for the north and the centre, and 2 weeks to cover the whole country from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. Time Travel Turtle calls two weeks just right for the full run. The 1,726 km rail line takes about 33 to 35 hours on express trains depending on the source, which is why the packages fly.
Key takeaways
- Follow the full 10-day plan below, or see how the 10-day north to south tour handles a similar span.
- Two weeks buys you Sapa, Hue and the Mekong Delta, the route the 14-day Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City tour follows.
- With only a week, stop short of Ho Chi Minh City, as the 7-day package tour does by ending in Hoi An.
- Compare how the packages lay out their days on the homepage's comparison table and the route stop by stop section.
A 10-Day Vietnam Itinerary
This route runs north to south and covers Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City with two domestic flights. It runs in the same direction as [the 10-day north to south tour](/10-day-vietnam-tour-north-to-south/) at $1,099 per person, which swaps Ninh Binh and Hue for Sapa and Ba Na Hills.
-
Day 1
Arrive in Hanoi
Land at Noi Bai airport, about 35 km northeast of downtown. Hanoi has around 8.86 million people and a daily mean of 24.9 C in October, one of the months the north is listed as best. Spend the afternoon on foot in the Old Quarter. The Temple of Literature charges 70,000 VND for adults and opens 8:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:30.
-
Day 2
Hanoi sights
The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is free and opens mornings only, 7:30 to 10:30 on weekdays in the summer schedule, and it closes every Monday and Friday. Queues run 30 to 45 minutes on weekdays and 90 minutes or more at weekends. Note the mausoleum shuts for about two months each year for preservation work. Covered shoulders and knees are required and staff turn visitors away.
-
Day 3
Hanoi to Ninh Binh
Ninh Binh is about 90 to 95 km south of Hanoi. A limousine bus takes about 2 hours for 150,000 to 350,000 VND, or the train takes 2 to 2.5 hours for 80,000 to 200,000 VND from Hanoi Railway Station. Afternoon is for Mua Cave, 100,000 VND per person on the official price list, with around 500 stone steps to the viewpoints.
-
Day 4
Trang An and Hoa Lu
A Trang An boat ticket costs 250,000 VND for adults over 1.3 m and 120,000 VND for children 1 to 1.3 m. Route 2 takes 2 to 3 hours and covers 4 caves and 3 spiritual sites. The wharf sits 3 km south of Hoa Lu, where the ancient capital charges 20,000 VND for adults. Trang An opens 6:00 AM to 4:45 PM in summer.
-
Day 5
To Ha Long Bay, cruise night
Hanoi to Ha Long is roughly 150 to 170 km, 2 to 2.5 hours by car on the expressway. Shuttles usually leave Hanoi between 7:30 and 8:30 AM. Most cruises depart from Tuan Chau Port. Plastic single-use products have been banned in the area since 1 September 2019. Sleep on board.
-
Day 6
Ha Long to Da Nang
On the 10-day tour the cruise ends at noon, then a drive back to Hanoi leads to the flight to Da Nang. The Hanoi to Da Nang flight takes about 90 minutes according to Rough Guides. Da Nang airport served 15.5 million passengers in 2019 and sits inside the city. A GrabCar to the centre is listed at 80,000 to 120,000 VND by Vietnam Tourism and at 50,000 to 70,000 VND plus a 30,000 VND pickup fee by another source.
-
Day 7
Hoi An Ancient Town
Hoi An lies about 28 km south of Da Nang, under 1 hour from the airport. The ancient town ticket costs 120,000 VND and covers the Japanese Covered Bridge, a 10 m wooden structure from the start of the 17th century, plus one museum site and three more monuments. One ticket is valid for up to 3 days and children under 16 enter free. The town opens 9:00 AM to 9:30 PM in summer.
-
Day 8
Hai Van Pass to Hue
Hoi An to Hue is 3 to 4 hours and about 140 km via the Hai Van route. The pass itself is about 21 km long on National Route 1 and the old road climbs to 496 m, though the tunnel now carries most traffic. Pick up the evening flight from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City if you are skipping Hue, or stay the night. Hue to Da Nang trains run about 2.5 hours for 100,000 to 120,000 VND per Vinwonders, while Seat61 gives 1h30 to 2h in prose and 2h40 on the SE9 timetable.
-
Day 9
Hue or straight south
With a Hue stop, the Imperial City ticket is 200,000 VND for adults, open 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM in summer. The Minh Mang, Tu Duc and Khai Dinh tombs each cost 150,000 VND, and Thien Mu Pagoda is free, about 5 km from the Citadel. The Hue to Ho Chi Minh City flight takes about 90 minutes. Hue gets about 2,936 mm of rain a year, so check the season first.
-
Day 10
Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong
Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam with over 14 million people. The War Remnants Museum opens daily 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM and Independence Palace lists adults at 65,000 VND per Vietnam Tourism, with the ticket counter closing at 14:00. My Tho, the classic Mekong day trip, is about 70 km from the city. Fly home from Tan Son Nhat, which handled about 39.9 million passengers in 2024.
A 2-Week Vietnam Itinerary
Fourteen days adds Sapa in the north, a full Hue day and more Mekong Delta time to the 10-day spine. This is the shape of [the 14-day Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City tour](/14-day-vietnam-tour-hanoi-sapa-halong-saigon/) at $1,544 per person, which runs Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Sapa, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, Hue, Ho Chi Minh City, Cu Chi and My Tho with 2 domestic flights.
-
Day 1
Arrive in Hanoi
Same start as the 10-day plan. Land at Noi Bai, settle into the Old Quarter, and if it is Thursday to Sunday the Temple of Literature night tour runs 19:00 to 22:00 for 199,000 VND. Daytime entry is 70,000 VND for adults.
-
Day 2
Hanoi
Use the day for the mausoleum in the morning and the museums after. The mausoleum is free, queues 30 to 45 minutes on weekdays. Keep the evening for the first night train if you are putting Sapa first, or leave Sapa until after Ninh Binh as the 14-day package does.
-
Day 3
Night train or bus to Sapa
Sa Pa is about 300 km northwest of Hanoi and 319 km by road, 4 to 5.5 hours by car. The overnight train to Lao Cai takes 8 hours: SP1 leaves Hanoi at 9:35 PM and reaches Lao Cai at 5:30 AM. Berths start at 316,000 VND in 2nd class with 6 berths and 566,000 VND in VIP with 2. Book for Hanoi Railway Station, not Yen Vien or Gia Lam.
-
Day 4
Sapa and the Muong Hoa Valley
Lao Cai station is about 35 km from Sapa, 50 to 90 minutes by road, and public bus 1 costs 40,000 VND. The valley villages of Ta Van, Lao Chai and Giang Ta Chai hold Hmong, Dao and Tay communities and make the classic trek. Local Vietnam says the rice terraces turn golden in September and other guides run the colour from September to November. October to November is mild with little rain.
-
Day 5
Fansipan or Cat Cat, back to Hanoi
The Fansipan cable car round trip costs 850,000 VND for adults, the line is 6,292.5 m long and the ride takes about 15 minutes to Vietnam's highest peak, which Wikipedia gives as 3,147.3 m while other sources say 3,143 m. Cat Cat village is 2.5 km from town, and its entrance is listed at 150,000 VND in one guide and 70,000 to 100,000 VND in others. Return trains leave Lao Cai at 10:30 PM and arrive in Hanoi at 5:25 AM.
-
Day 6
Hanoi to Ninh Binh
Back to the 10-day spine. About 2 hours by limousine bus, 150,000 to 350,000 VND. Climb Mua Cave's 500 steps late in the day when the light drops. The site opens roughly 6:00 to 19:00 and admission is 100,000 VND on the official list.
-
Day 7
Trang An, then on toward Ha Long
Take the morning Trang An boat, 250,000 VND for adults, then move toward the coast. Rough Guides gives Ninh Binh to Ha Long Bay as 3.5 hours by road. Some 14-day plans run the cruise here, others insert it after Hanoi. Bai Tu Long is the least crowded of the three bays, Ha Long the most crowded.
-
Day 8
Ha Long Bay cruise night
Overnight cruises in Bai Tu Long run 2,500,000 to 7,000,000 VND per person, and prices can rise 30 to 40 percent at Tet and Christmas to New Year. Lan Ha Bay cruises leave from Cat Ba Island, about 2 hours by bus to GOT Port plus a 10-minute speedboat. Sleep on board.
-
Day 9
Fly south to Da Nang and Hoi An
Return to Hanoi for the flight to Da Nang, about 90 minutes, then a short transfer to Hoi An. The 14-day package flies Hanoi to Da Nang on day 8 and includes 20 kg of luggage per person. Check in to the ancient town that evening, it stays open to 9:30 PM in summer.
-
Day 10
Hoi An
Buy the 120,000 VND town ticket, valid 3 days. Ticket holders get free art performances at 66 Bach Dang Street at 10:15 AM, 3:15 PM and 4:15 PM daily. If you want My Son, the sanctuary sits 35 to 40 km southwest and opens 6:00 to 18:00 with tickets at 150,000 VND for foreigners.
-
Day 11
Hue, the tombs and the Citadel
Hoi An to Hue is 3 to 4 hours and about 140 km by the Hai Van route. Combo prices differ by source, 530,000 VND for the Imperial City plus the Minh Mang, Tu Duc and Khai Dinh tombs and 580,000 VND for the all-sites combo. Thien Mu Pagoda is free. Hue's wettest months are October at 772.7 mm and November at 641.7 mm, so plan this leg in the drier window if you can.
-
Day 12
Fly Hue to Ho Chi Minh City
The flight takes about 90 minutes from Phu Bai airport, one of Vietnam's 11 international airports. On arrival, the War Remnants Museum runs to 5:30 PM daily and Ben Thanh Market's night market runs 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The city has a dry season from December to April.
-
Day 13
Cu Chi and the city
The Cu Chi tunnel complex is described as 121 km long by Wikipedia and about 220 km by another guide, and the sites open 8:00 to 17:00 daily. Tickets are listed at 110,000 VND at Ben Dinh and 90,000 VND at Ben Duoc, with a guide an extra 20,000 VND, though other guides quote different totals. Back in town, Vietnam Tourism lists Independence Palace as open 08:00 to 15:30 with tickets at 65,000 VND for adults.
-
Day 14
Mekong Delta overnight or fly home
Can Tho is 170 km southwest of the city, about 3.5 hours by bus from Mien Tay station. Cai Rang is the largest floating market in the delta with 100 to 200 boats on a good day, and peak trading is 5:30 to 7:30 AM, so an overnight is the only way to see it properly. A private boat costs 400,000 to 600,000 VND for 2 to 3 hours. Fly out of Tan Son Nhat, or add the Phnom Penh bus at about 6 hours.
One Week: North or South
With seven days you cover one half of the country properly instead of racing across all of it. Rough Guides lays out a north week and a south week, and a package handles the same ground with the transfers built in.
A North Week
Base yourself on Hanoi and keep the days close. Rough Guides' 7-day north plan runs Hanoi, a day trip to Duong Lam about 1.5 hours west of the city, Mai Chau roughly 2.5 hours beyond that, and an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise. Hanoi to Ha Long is 150 to 170 km and 2 to 2.5 hours on the expressway, with cruise shuttles usually leaving Hanoi between 7:30 and 8:30 AM.
To add Sapa instead of Mai Chau, take the overnight train: SP1 leaves Hanoi at 9:35 PM and reaches Lao Cai at 5:30 AM, and the station is about 35 km and a 50 to 90 minute transfer from Sapa. The Hanoi Lao Cai expressway covers the 319 km drive in 4 to 5.5 hours by car. For Ninh Binh, the train from Hanoi takes 2 to 2.5 hours and costs 80,000 to 200,000 VND, and the road distance is about 90 to 95 km.
If you would rather not plan any of this, the 6-Day Ha Long, Ninh Binh and Sapa Tour does the north loop for $279 with a Ha Long Bay day trip on its itinerary (the description says a 2-day cruise, so confirm), a Ninh Binh day trip and two Sapa days, and the 7-Day Vietnam Package Tour continues south to Hoi An for $450. Its Hanoi to Da Nang flight on day 5 is excluded from the price, so budget that ticket yourself.
A South Week
The southern week works outward from Ho Chi Minh City. Rough Guides' south plan pairs the city with a Mekong Delta day trip, with My Tho about 70 km from the city. Can Tho is 170 km southwest and about 3.5 hours by bus from Mien Tay Bus Station, and the Cai Rang floating market peaks between 5:30 and 7:30 AM, so you need to be on the water early.
The weather decides when to go. Ho Chi Minh City has a dry season from December to April and a rainy season from May to November, and the delta region is best in the same December to April window. The full details of timing sit in the guide to the best time to visit Vietnam.
Two packages cover this half. The 3-Day Mekong Delta Tour from Saigon costs $261 with two hotel nights, and an optional exit to Phnom Penh by fast boat or bus replaces the return, with the tour ending early at the drop-off. The 6-Day South Vietnam and Island Tour costs $639 and adds Cu Chi, a Mui Ne day trip and a flight to Phu Quoc for snorkelling. Be aware that its two flights are not listed in the inclusions, so confirm them before you book.

Fly, Train or Bus
Vietnam is long, and the choice of transport shapes how much you actually see. This table puts the main itinerary legs side by side, with times and fares from the sources on record, including where the sources disagree.
Airports and Why Packages Fly
Vietnam has 11 international airports, and four of them anchor a classic itinerary: Hanoi Noi Bai (HAN), about 35 km northeast of downtown with Terminal 1 for domestic flights, Ho Chi Minh City Tan Son Nhat (SGN), which handled about 39.9 million passengers and opened a Terminal 3 for domestic flights, Da Nang (DAD) in the centre, and Hue Phu Bai (HUI). Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, Bamboo Airways and Sun PhuQuoc Airways all fly the Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City route. Flying turns a 33 to 35 hour rail ride into about two hours in the air, which is why the grand tours on this site fly.
Look at how the packages lay out their days. The 10-Day Vietnam Tour, North to South flies Hanoi to Da Nang on day 6 and Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City on day 8. The 9-Day Vietnam Tour, South to North runs the same logic in reverse, with flights on day 4 and day 6 on its itinerary, although its inclusions list only one flight. The 14-Day Vietnam Tour, Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City uses two Vietjet flights with 20 kg of luggage each, and the 12-Day Vietnam and Cambodia Tour uses three flights, ending in Siem Reap. Note the honest gaps: the 7-day tour excludes its Hanoi to Da Nang air ticket, and the 6-day south tour does not list its flights in the inclusions. The overnight train survives as the romantic option on shorter legs like Hanoi to Hue, about 12h45m on SE1, but the full 33 to 35 hour rail run is hard to justify on a trip under three weeks.
| Leg | By air | By road or rail |
|---|---|---|
| Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City | About 2 hours 15 minutes per Rough Guides, roughly two hours per Local Vietnam, another source says 1 hour 45 | Train 1,726 km, express trains about 33 to 34.7 hours per Wikipedia or 34 to 35 hours per Rough Guides, locals about 40 hours. Bus about 36 hours. Road just under 1,600 km via Highway 1A |
| Hanoi to Sapa | No airport, fly nowhere, road and rail only | Car 319 km, 4 to 5.5 hours on the CT05 expressway. Bus 5.5 to 6 hours from about 300,000 to 400,000 VND depending on the page. Night train to Lao Cai 8 hours, berths from 316,000 VND 2nd class to 566,000 VND VIP, then 35 km and 50 to 90 minutes to Sapa |
| Hanoi to Ha Long | No airport serves the bay directly | 150 to 170 km, 2 to 2.5 hours by car or limousine, bus 2.5 to 3 hours for 150,000 to 380,000 VND |
| Hanoi to Ninh Binh | No practical flight | About 90 to 95 km by road, limousine bus about 2 hours for 150,000 to 350,000 VND, train 2 to 2.5 hours for 80,000 to 200,000 VND |
| Hanoi to Dong Hoi (for Phong Nha) | Flight about 1.5 hours, Dong Hoi Airport about 45 km from the park | Train SE1 about 9h52m. Driving to Phong Nha can take up to 8 hours per Rough Guides |
| Hue to Da Nang | Short hop, usually driven instead | Train about 2.5 hours for 100,000 to 120,000 VND, Seat61 prose says 1h30 to 2h. Road via the Hai Van Pass, 21 km pass road climbing to 496 m, Hue to Hoi An is 3 to 4 hours |
| Da Nang to Hoi An | No flight, Hoi An has no railway station | 28 km, about 1 hour by bus for 150,000 to 200,000 VND, under 1 hour by car per Rough Guides |
| Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho | Can Tho has a small airport (VCA) | 170 km southwest, about 3.5 hours by bus from Mien Tay Bus Station |

What the Days Look Like on a Card
The packages compress the independent route into the same skeleton. A 14-day card runs Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Sapa, a Ha Long Bay cruise night on day 7, a day 8 flight toward Hoi An, Hue, a day 11 flight south, and Cu Chi and My Tho before the end. Meals matter: that tour includes breakfast on days 2 to 14, lunch on 9 days and dinner only on the cruise night, so you pay for the other dinners yourself, and all sales are final. The 9-day tour includes breakfast on days 2 to 9, lunch on 5 days, and one cruise dinner, with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. The 10-day tour adds Sapa before its Ha Long night on day 4 and keeps free 24-hour cancellation.
Group sizes are modest, from up to 10 on the 9-day and 6-day tours to up to 15 on the shared days of the 14-day and 8-day tours. Entrance fees are included on every tour in the table, and the flight inclusions differ, so read each card before comparing on price alone. A wider breakdown of spending sits in the guide to the Vietnam trip cost, and the full set of Vietnam tour packages is on the homepage.

Do and Don't
Do
- Do buy Lao Cai train tickets online up to 60 days ahead, because berths sell out and you must book for Hanoi Railway Station, not Yen Vien or Gia Lam.
- Do plan the Mekong Delta for the December to April dry season, because the south gets afternoon downpours from May to November and Cai Rang trading is largely over by 8 AM anyway.
- Do plan the Hue tombs around ticket validity, because tickets at Minh Mang, Tu Duc and Khai Dinh cost 150,000 VND each and an all-sites combo is valid 3 days.
- Do check your train fare against the official Vietnam Railways site, because prices there move about 5 percent and holiday fares run higher.
- Do fly the Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City leg on any trip under three weeks, because the express train still takes about 33 to 35 hours against roughly two hours in the air.
Don't
- Don't build an itinerary around the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum without checking it is open, because it closes every Monday and Friday and shuts for roughly two months each year for preservation work.
- Don't try to see Sapa's rice terraces in the golden season without reading up first, because the sources disagree, with one saying September and another saying the colour runs September to November.
- Don't plan cave days in Phong Nha late in the year, because the caves face flooding from October to December and Son Doong closes entirely from September to January.
- Don't plan travel during Tet without booking far ahead, because most businesses close for several days and transport books out weeks in advance.

See stays in SapaQuestions About Planning a Vietnam Itinerary
Is a Vietnam itinerary better north to south or south to north?
Both directions cover the same 1,726 km of rail line, so the choice is mostly about flight timing and where you want your beach days. Packages mirror each other: the 10-day tour runs north to south while the 9-day tour runs south to north for $999, and both list domestic flights, though the 9-day inclusions count one flight while its itinerary has two.
How many days do I need for a Vietnam itinerary?
Two weeks is a comfortable minimum for the whole country, roughly matching Time Travel Turtle's route of 2 nights Hanoi, 1 Ha Long Bay, 2 Ninh Binh, 2 Phong Nha, 1 Hue, 1 Hoi An, 1 Nha Trang and 2 Ho Chi Minh City. Shorter trips should take one half only, and Rough Guides says 3 to 4 weeks allows more time for Ha Giang and the Phong Nha caves.
Can I do a Vietnam itinerary by train instead of flying?
You can, but the full Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City journey takes about 33 to 34.7 hours on express trains, and older guides cite up to 40 hours. A practical hybrid is to fly the longest legs and keep trains for sections like Hanoi to Hue at about 12h45m on SE1.
Which airports should a Vietnam itinerary use?
Four carry most itineraries: Hanoi Noi Bai (HAN) and Ho Chi Minh City Tan Son Nhat (SGN) at the ends, Da Nang (DAD) in the centre for Hoi An and Hue, and Hue Phu Bai (HUI) as an alternative. Vietnam has 11 international airports in total, and the 14-Day Vietnam Tour, Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City uses two Vietjet flights with 20 kg of luggage per person.
How does a Sapa stop fit into a Vietnam itinerary?
Sapa is 319 km from Hanoi by road, reached by a 4 to 5.5 hour drive on the expressway or an 8 hour overnight train to Lao Cai plus a 50 to 90 minute transfer. Budget a 2 to 3 day slot, like the 3-day trek for $98 on record, or the 10-day grand tour which puts Sapa before its day 4 Ha Long cruise night.
Do the package tours follow the same days as a self-planned itinerary?
Yes, the cards mirror the independent route with flights replacing the worst road and rail legs. The 14-day tour covers Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Long, Hoi An, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City for $1,544, but read the meal list, because dinner is included only on the cruise night and the remaining dinners are on your own.
